Scientific citation databases

A number of scientometric indicators are used to assess the performance of a scientist. Scientific citation systems (scientometric databases) are the sources for obtaining this data.

Scientometric databases are reference databases and search engines that take into account the citation of articles on the basis of article lists of used literature and form statistics that characterise the state and dynamics of the indicators of demand, activity and impact indices of the individual scientists and research organisations activities.

The use of scientometric databases gives the researcher the opportunity to:

  • search for information on the thematic area of interest;
  • create author profiles;
  • select journals of interest to place publications;
  • analyse the results of publishing activity and discover new areas of work in the subject area of interest;
  • evaluate the achievements of other scientists and look for colleagues for further co-operation.

There is a large number of international citation systems: Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, PubMed, MathNet, Mathematics, Chemical Abstracts, Agris, GeoRef and others. The section presents universal citation databases and basic scientometric indicators.
